Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest certain rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
