RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
