Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
